An interesting point of discussion. A video game allows us to escape ourselves and pursue what we wish.
We can conquer nations, kill our enemies, find an entertaining yet most assuredly fake romance and pursue it to the end. We shape our interactive worlds.
Yet why do we do all this when we could just live our actual lives? We are all capable of fantastically, wonderful deeds and having beautiful lives. Yet we dive into the world of pixels with reckless abandon to escape the bright lights of reality.
What is so wrong with the real world that it requires an escape?
I find it odd that it is from the "1st world" that this escapism is prevalent in. We who have it good are the ones who want an alternative reality? Does that seem right to you?
The thing about the first world is, any problems we have come about as part of being in the first world. Most problems one encounters in the "third world" kill you or are overcome by your own endeavours. We've insulated ourselves against those problems and as a result we are able to explore new areas of the human condition. We have no means of dealing with any dilemma we may encounter because if we want to retain our priveledged first world existence we must continue to act in a first world way, which includes remaining in a mental state where we are fit to participate in work etc.
ReplyDeleteThus we all need some escapism, some of us may use video games, or just our own imaginations.
The thing about first world problems is that they're intangible, almost unreal, so it's hard to find a real solution: it's easier just to try and ignore it.
